FOREWORD
The Flat Creek 3aptist Church Minutes are records of the church proceedings of a local congregation. They are private records of the local church, recorded for future reference within that church only, and never intended as a public document. Often, they are of a very sacred nature as they record, many times, individual confessionals. They also reveal sensitive information relative to church discipline or the settling of differences between members.
Early Baptists adhered strictly to the New Testament teaching that a Christian should settle differences with a Christian brother or sister within the covenant fellowship of the local church, not in the civil courts. More than being replete with the religious history of a mountain Baptist community, these records contain historical information on individuals, families, and community life that cannot be found in the public records.
The abstracting of Baptist church minutes is a most serious and demanding task, more exacting than transcribing journals of a Morgan Edwards or a Bishop Asbury. It requires an understanding of the nature of Baptist life and polity, a sensitive intellect about what is private and what is public, and a pragmatic scholarship to documentation — the leaving of tracks for retracing the path of the abstractor's process.
Mrs. Morgan has achieved, to a significant degree, each of these prerequisites for evolving private records into a public document. Without published guidelines or printed models , she has established a precedent with this publication by being sensitive to the nature of her material , and still making it user oriented without violating the original spirit and intent of these minutes, even retaining the diverse spellings of a single name.
In the original , the spelling of words varied from clerk to clerk and was never made consistent since they were read, corrected, and approved orally. To these Christians spelling was not a prerequisite for accuracy, for truth was truth no matter how it was spelled. Mr. John Angus McLeod, a Baptist historian, once said, "a truly educated person should be able to spell a word more than one way," and "never let the facts get in the way of the truth." Such was the nature of these mountain Baptists and the Flat Creek Baptist Church Minutes .

In January of 1985 while working on the family history of the Reverend Stephen Morgan I was told about a microfilm at Pack Memorial Library, Asheville , North Carolina. This film contains the minutes of the Flat Creek Baptist Church , Weaverville , North Carolina , from 1833-1931. The church, located in the Flat Creek Community of north Buncombe County, was established in 1811 with the Reverend Stephen Morgan as its founding minister.
Several people urged me to abstract these minutes so that they might be more readily accessible to a greater number of people. This volume is the result.
The minutes were microfilmed by the Historical Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, Nashville, Tennessee. Most of the abstrac- tion was done from a personal copy procured from the commission.
Preceding the minutes on the microfilm is a copy of pages 34 and 35 from History of The French Broad Baptist Association by Reverend John Ammons. Neither my copy of the microfilm nor the copy at Pack Library are archivally certified.
By permission of the church and accompanied by the church clerk, Mrs. Nan McLean Keith, I was allowed to examine the original minutes in the church's safe deposit box. From my observations there appear to be no inconsistencies between the original and the microfilm records.
More than a record of proceedings , these minutes are a history of a people, their relationships to each other, to their church and the community, reflecting the place and the times in which they lived.
For the sake of brevity it was necessary to eliminate extraneous material. Included are membership lists, church doctrine and ordi- nances, customs and sacraments, finances, structures and buildings, organizations, affiliations with associations and the larger church, and all names of people, places, publications, documents, events and groups. Also included are interactions with other churches , other people and the community.
At the time the first log building was erected, Buncombe County encompassed all of the area west of Burke and Rutherford Counties. Only two Baptist churches in what is now Buncombe County, Newfound Baptist

Church, 1802, and Cane Creek Baptist Church, 1805, (now Fairview Baptist
Church), are older than the Flat Creek Baptist Church.
Through war and peace, prosperity and depression, Flat Creek Baptist Church has progressed from a primitive log building to a modern brick structure containing the sanctuary, classrooms, offices, fellowship hall and a large well-equipped kitchen. Presently church membership is 289.
With steadfast purpose and strong unwavering faith, this church and its people have proven themselves as enduring as the mountains that beckoned their founding fathers , a lasting tribute to its ministers , officers, members, and the faith they lived.

We are cald to announce the death of our aged & well beloved BROTHER CLEM DAVIS who left an aged widow a number of children grand chil- dren & great grand children to mourn the loss of his Religious Com- pany He was a Revolutionary soldier from 1776 till WALLACE was Taken at little YORK by GENERAL WASHINGTON in 1781 He went two years against the Indians before The Struggle with GREAT /17 BRITTAIN began He joined the UNITED BAPTIST CHURCH in 1791 or 2 was Baptized by the REV PERMENTER MORGAN & lived an orderly member in this church many years before his decease & we confidently hope
5 believe that our loss is his Eternal gain He professed days be- fore he deceasd a full resignation to the will of his divine master

OLIVER ERWIN MCDARIS of the 5th NC CAVELRY died at WINDER HOSPITTAL
RICHMOND V. A. Oct 14th 1864 aged 26 years and Eleven months the deceased voluntered in 1862 and was captored in KENTDCKEY and Sent to CAMP CHASE OHIO and thence to FORT DELEWARE being Sick was Parol- ed and Sent to RICHMOND VA. he was a good Solder and above all pious Christian he profesed Religion and Joined the BAPTIST CHDRCH Nov 19th 1856 he requested his Nurce to tell his Friends to meet him in Heaven for said he as soon as 1 breath my last I will be their /

become nessary for him to take up armes in Defense of his cuntry he volentierd under CAPT HARDY of the 60 NC in which Servis he Spent 14 months of his Life as A faithful Souldier in Defense of his cuntry & he got a Sick furlow & came home & while at home he was assign to the office of lieutenant in A company at home & thair he faithfully Discharged his Duty as A offiser & as a Souldier in Defense of his home & fire Side & while on Duty he was killed on BEVERDAM NC BUNCOMBE COUNTY he left A Beloved wife & 2 children & many Relations to lament & mourn after his Departure Yet We have to Submit Blieving he is With his Beloved Saviour in the Glory World

Obituary Notice of T GENTRY
Dear Brethren and Sisters
We are Seldom called upon to perforin a more painful task that [than] that of announceing the death of old father THOMAS GENTRY who died March the 20th 1868 of dropsy at his residence in BON- COMBE CO NC aged 83 years 3 months 14 days BROTHER GENTRY pro- fessed religion and joined the Baptist Church Oct 1811 of which he was a memb[e]r at his death his last Sickness was that of extreen Suffering but was bourn with much patience and Cristian resignation he was confined to his bed Some Seven weeks and dureing that time he often expressed a desire to depart and be with Christ he is gone he died loved and respected by all who
knew him his end was not only peaceful but triumphant /
Blessed are they who die in the lord BROTHER GENTRY left Seven children and a wide circle of friends to mourn his loss in his death the church has lost one of her most faithful and examplery members his C[h]ildren and his children an affectionate father but their Small loss is his great gain he has gone from labor to reward
