Mr. Rod Smith, our commencement speaker, graduated from Missouri Southern with many awards. An All-American in football as well as an All-Amer¬ ican in the classroom, he earned degrees in Business Administration, Economics and Finance, and Marketing and Management. His accomplishments in the class¬ room led him to become the recipient of the Missouri Southern State University Outstanding Graduate Award in 1994.
A native of Texarkana, Ark., Smith enjoyed a stellar playing career at South¬ ern, where he set MIAA records in career-receiving yards (3,122) and touchdowns (35). He also still holds school records for catches in a game (13), receiving yards Rod Smith
in a game (254), receiving yards in a season (1,439), highest average gain per re¬ ception in a season (24.0), touchdown receptions in a season (15) and longest pass reception (98 yards). He finished his career with 158 receptions for 3,122 yards and 35 touchdowns, which is now third all-time in Division II.
Smith was an All-American in 1991, and helped the Lions to their last MIAA title and NCAA post-season ap¬ pearance when the team went 9-1-1 in 1993. That season, he was named first-team All-American by the Associated Press, Kodak, Football Gazette and NCAA Division II sports information directors. Also in 1993, Smith caught 63 passes for 986 yards and 1 3 touchdowns, and was a finalist for the Harlon Hill Award, given annually to the top foot¬ ball player in Division II.
Smith entered the NFL with the Denver Broncos as a college free agent on May 3, 1994. He holds Broncos’ fran¬ chise records for career receptions (849), receiving yards (1 1,389), touchdown catches (68) and overall touchdowns (71). He leads all undrafted players in NFL history in every major career receiving category.
Smith ranks 1 1th in the NFL in career receptions, 17th in career receiving yards, and tied for 30th in career re¬ ceiving touchdowns. In 2005, he became one of 25 players in NFL history to reach 10,000 career yards, a feat he ac¬ complished on Monday Night Football vs. Kansas City (9/26/05). Smith is the first player from the MIAA to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl, and the first to play for two Super Bowl champions (Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII).
He posted eight career 1,000 yard seasons, including six straight from 1997-2002. He is also one of just six play¬ ers to have back-to-back seasons with 100 receptions. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2000, 2001, and 2004. He retired from the NFL in 2008.
Smith was inducted into the Missouri Southern Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003 and is the only football player in Southern history to have his number (9) retired. He has also been inducted into the Division II Football Hall of Fame, as well as the Arkansas, Missouri, and Colorado Sports Halls of Fame.
In September of this year, Smith became the 23rd member of the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame. He was joined at Sports Authority Field by members of his family, many teammates from the 1997 and 1998 seasons and several other Ring of Fame members.
“It’s all about every person who has supported me throughout my life,” he has said.
Rod is an Independent Distributor for Organo Gold, reaching the rank of Diamond. He has three children, Van¬ essa, Roderick and Devin.

Rebuilding Joplin after the catastrophic EF-5 tornado on May 22, 2011 means keeping high school graduates in the city to pro¬ vide the future leadership needed to bring the city back better and stronger. To accomplish that goal, MSSU is offering scholarships to student were sophomores, juniors and seniors as of May 20, 2011 at four Joplin high schools: Joplin High School, McAuley High School, College Heights Christian School and Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School.
These students represent the high school graduating classes of 2011, 2012 and 2013. Scholarships will be for $1,000 each for the first academic year after the students graduate from high school. The scholarships represent approximately 25 percent of the current annual cost for a full-time student at MSSU.
Missouri Southern also is offering full-tuition scholarships to the 25 children of the families involved in the Tulsa and Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity’s “Ten for Joplin” project.
MSSU to offer Four-year Degree in Neosho
Neosho-area students pursuing their four-year degree in man¬ agement will soon have a more streamlined process, due to a new partnership between Missouri Southern State University and Crowder College.
The two schools signed an articulation agreement enabling MSSU to offer upper-division courses in business administration with an emphasis in management at Crowder College, making it pos¬ sible for Crowder students to finish their bachelor’s degrees through MSSU on the Crowder campus. MSSU will have a satellite office on Crowder’s campus with a dedicated admissions counselor working to help students with the transition.
“Forming a partnership like this is an important and necessary step to help these students achieve their dreams of completing a four- year degree,” said MSSU President Bruce Speck. “We know that in some cases, students have the desire to finish their degree but not the ability to travel. This agreement makes it possible for both schools to help students meet their goals.”
Senior receives two scholarships
Natascha Lord, a senior German and International Business ma¬ jor from Waynesville, Mo., has received a $4,000 award from the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program.
Lord, who is also a member of the women’s soccer team at MSSU, will be spending the spring semester at Katholische Univer- sitat Eichstatt - Ingolstadt in Germany through the International Stu¬ dent Exchange Program (ISEP). She has also received a $500 New York Charitable Trust- Annette Kade Scholarship in recognition of her academic and personal merit.
ALMA MATER
Words by Mary Laird, Music by Emerson Jackson, Class of '39 Class of '39
Our Al-ma Ma - ter, we ho - nor thee.
Af - ter we have part - ed as the years roll by;
we'll keep each me - mo - ry hail, hail to thee.
Missouri Southern State University’s “Alma Mater” was drafted during the Joplin Junior College second year by a group that included Mary Laird, Joan Epperson, Enos Currey, Ellen Beasley and Emerson Jackson. Laird was principally responsible for the lyrics while Jackson set it to music. It was first sung during a Class-Day program in 1939.

s early as the twelfth century the first modem universities, at Bologna and Paris, were centers of Euro¬ pean learning. The usual garb of the time, for both churchmen and laymen, was a long gown which was necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings of the day. Scholars, generally members of church orders, wore such robes and also hoods to protect their shaven heads. Later, skull caps were worn on the head, and the hood became a cape which could be pulled over the head in unpleasant weather. The hood was also sometimes used to collect alms from the more affluent members of the community. As additional universities were founded, distinctive forms of the gown and hood were adopted by their faculties. Variations indicated ranks within the institutions. Strict rules were published and in some cases punishment cited for tailors who departed from the authorized design.
The academic hat was a later development, adapted from the headdress of the ordinary people. Aca¬ demically, it was originally worn as a symbol of the master’s degree, and existed in various forms: some were round, some square and some had a tuft in the center. The flat, square “mortar board” of today originated at Oxford University in England.
Academic costume came to America in 1754 with the founding of King’s College, now Columbia Uni¬ versity. Styles became quite varied as they were in Europe, but in 1895 a group of American college and uni¬ versity representatives met to establish a uniform system of academic apparel for this country. This led to the establishment in 1902 of an “Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume.” The American Council of Education formed a committee in 1 932 to review the 1 895 code, which was again reviewed and revised in both 1 960 and 1965.
There are today three basic types of gowns and hoods. The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. Recipients of the associate degrees wear gray gowns designed like the bachelor’s gown. The master’s gown is designed with an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist and with an arc cut away at the front of the sleeve. It may be worn either open or closed. The doctoral gown is of a full design with voluminous sleeves, and it also may be worn open or closed. Unlike the other two, the doctoral gown is faced down the front with velvet and with three velvet bars on the sleeves. These may be black or a color related to the subject of the degree. Thus, arts, letters and humanities may be white, business degrees may be drab or sapphire blue, education uses light blue, fine arts is brown, music is pink and science is golden yellow, to name a few.
The caps are always black, with a black tassel for baccalaureate degrees and a tassel of the color indicated above for master’s. Doctoral caps usually have a tassel of metallic gold color.
The hoods worn by master’s degree recipients are lined with the official colors of the institution award¬ ing the degree. The binding and edging of the hood is silk or velvet in the color pertaining to the subject area. Doctoral hoods are longer and designed somewhat fuller, but the colors again are those of the institution grant¬ ing the degree for the lining, and of the subject for the wide edging. There exists a small bachelor’s hood, but generally it is not used in this country.
The hoods represented in MSSU ceremonies are a combination of colors from each of the collaborating institutions. Traditional colors and corresponding fields of study are:
